The Best Halloween Movies Of All Time!
Halloween is coming, and what’s better than hunkering down in front of the TV to have your pants scared off? My family and I always love a good scare during Halloween season. Here are some of the best Halloween movies to watch!
Halloween
The movie Halloween is my personal favorite. The movie is classic and topical, Halloween was released in 1978 and spawned an entire series of slasher films and novels. Directed by John Carpenter, the premise is that killer Michael Myers, who was committed to a sanitarium as a child after murdering his sister, has escaped and is now stalking the population of Haddonfield, Illinois on Halloween. If you’re a fan of slasher movies, this is the one for you.
The Thing
Another John Carpenter movie, The Thing (1982) is a sci-fi horror movie set on an Antarctic base. On the base, an alien life form begins to kill and replace the people there. The Thing is halfway between gore-horror and psychological horror, and offers something for everyone. This movie is coupled with clever practical effects that still look good today! It’s a sure bet if you want to be paranoid that your family has been absorbed and replaced by monsters.
Hellraiser
A Clive Barker movie, the original Hellraiser (1987) is a brilliant take on slasher films and gory horror, where despite the existence of supernatural monsters, most of the human characters are far, far worse. However, if you’re squeamish about blood and some incredibly gory special effects, this is not the film for you. Still, there’s a reason Hellraiser spawned a whole series of sequels- it’s very, very good.
Dark Water
The original Dark Water is a Japanese horror film about a woman and her daughter who move into an old apartment building. However, they soon discover that not everything is what it seems to be. The supernatural elements are coupled with the woman’s gradual mental breakdown over her divorce, so it is not always obvious what is real. A piece of psychological horror, it’s sure to make you nervous when your plumbing starts acting up.
Psycho
One of Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpieces, Psycho (1960) is a classic of the horror movie genre. Widely considered to be the birthplace of the slasher film, it doesn’t suffer at all for being in black and white. Even though there are a few special effects it still looks spectacular. It manages to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the movie. This one’s a good choice if your tastes don’t run to the supernatural- the horror in Psycho is all too human.
Halloween is the best time of year for any of these movies. If you want to spend your Halloween night scared into insomnia, or maybe you just want to scare your friends. Any of these is a great choice, just don’t forget to grab the person next to you when there’s a jump scare- Halloween’s a great time for pranks, too. Also, check out these ideas for the best fall dates!
