No, I am NOT moving my toddler into a toddler bed. Nope. Nuh, uh. Nah…..
Yes, he goes down to bed extremely well, and even sleeps through the night most nights. Yes, he would absolutely love a toddler bed. But I refuse for at least another year, or even two, heck- three if we can get away with it! Let me tell you why.
HE IS SAFE:
Yes, I think he is safer in a crib. He does not even attempt to climb out yet, and if he does, we have already talked about moving the mattress to the ground to gain another 6 inches so he can’t climb.
Since he has started sleeping through the night, I have finally started sleeping a little heavier. Most mornings, I wake up to him calling me- knowing he is still in his crib, and I can come grab him at my leisure (ex. after going to the bathroom, putting on pants, opening curtains in the house, etc.).
If he is in a toddler bed, he can be sneaky if her wants to! He can climb out of bed without saying a peep, and I will most likely sleep through it. He could get into dangerous items, climb on top of things, or do anything else that is harmful, and I wouldn’t know. In a crib, he is safer.
DIFFICULTIES PUTTING HIM DOWN:
I believe that when we move him to a toddler bed, we will have more issues putting him down. He is a little boy, and little boys are tempted! Think of all the toys in his room, the TV playing in the living room, mommy and daddy next door, and so much more. If he is able to simply climb down, what is stopping him?!
He very rarely “cries it out” anymore, and if he does, it is a bit of whining for 5 minutes. But, having the crib walls up gives him a clear message that is is bedtime, and that he either needs to lay down, or try to self soothe a bit before mommy or daddy comes in.
IT GIVES A PLACE TO “STICK HIM”:
Okay, I am a stay at home mom, and I also work from home. Do you even know how hard that it?! No, I enjoy it, and I handle it well- but sometimes you just need a break and a safe place to “stick them.”
We did away with our playpen a while ago, and his high chair is associated only with eating. If I have work that I need to get done in order to afford being able to stay home with him, I need a place to put him for an hour.
So that place is his crib! With his curtains raised and letting in light, fun music playing, and a few toys, he is happy AND contained for an hour while I can focus.
BECAUSE I JUST DON’T WANT TO:
Yep. I just don’t want to. There are so many conveniences of a crib that I am not ready to give up. He would not go down for a nap or “quiet time” without his crib, I could never sleep in a bit, I would sleep horribly because of the anxiety wondering if he is up getting into things, and honestly I like the option to be lazy/leisurely instead of being up the moment he is.
You can pry the crib out of my cold, dead hands because I am NOT giving up nap time and my sanity.
