After 18 months of being a parent, I finally don’t feel the need to watch my baby breathe while he sleeps… I don’t worry as much when he walks down the sidewalk. And I know he can handle his food with confidence.
But, just as soon as you grow out of those fears and worries, there are new ones that surface.
I will never forget the first time he tried to climb up his dresser and I saw the whole unit begin to tip slightly. THAT was more scary than a skinned knee or too long of a pause between peaceful breaths at night.
We were just moving into our new apartment at the time, so of course nothing was secure, and there were boxes upon boxes everywhere- the perfect jungle gym for a mischievous toddler! This was a gentle reminder to us that we needed to add child locks, wall securings, and more to our ever growing list.
But to this day, I am so thankful I listened to my gut, checked on him, and that it wasn’t so much worse.
It’s National Safety Month!
This month is National Safety Month, and it is also the month we are FINALLY moving into our new house! I was walking through it late last week, and started making a mental note of things we will need to fix, buy, or do. And the first thing my mother and I saw, was that all of the windows in the living room had long corded window coverings- a huge hazard to infants and toddlers.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes. And I believe it! While I have seen other friends with kids simply hang the cord on a hook, I have also seen how easy it is for toddlers to get what they want by climbing or grabbing.
That is why I am asking my next landlord to replace any corded window coverings with cordless window coverings before we move in. To me, it is just not worth the risk. Plus, we all know corded windows look tacky nowadays! 😉
Don’t know how to choose a safer option for your home and kids? When selecting window coverings, cordless options can easily be identified by the Best for Kids™ certification label. Best for Kids products are currently available at major retailers across the country!
