October is National Fire Safety Month! And since we have just moved into our first home, it is definitely on our mind. Check out some of the things we are doing to both prevent and prepare for fire emergencies, and to learn about that one time I almost burned the house down… 😬
Whenever my parents leave town, they always say farewell with the classic joke: “Don’t burn the house down!” Ha, ha, ha…. Well, I’ll never forget my first experience with fire. My parents were out of town, and at 19 years old, I was watching my siblings. My brother graciously offered to cook dinner- and I wasn’t going to turn that down! So, I went upstairs, and not 10 minuted later I heard the words “FIRE!” screamed from below. The small pot of oil he was cooking the chicken in had caught on fire, and I came down just in time to see him make the worst move: pouring water over the top of it.
*Never pour water over a grease or oil fire! If possible, cover the pan with a lid to smother the flames, and call 9-1-1!*
The pot burst into flames, scorching the cabinets above the sink, and moving across the entire ceiling filling the whole house with smoke. Just as quickly as we got everyone out of the house, it was over, and nobody was harmed. Now I know firsthand why cooking equipment is the top cause of home fires…
Now, you’d think that as the children of a firefighter, we would have known exactly what to do. But, you can only prepare so much- and I’m sure glad my parents did!
As soon as the oil started smoking and my brother yelled fire, two of the six Kidde smoke alarms in our house were already going off letting all of us know something was up.
Even though this was years ago, it is still an event that crosses my mind- and I’m actually glad it does! Since my family and I have just moved into our first home, we are making both mental and physical notes about everything safety in our home. And one of the first things we are doing, is adding several additional smoke alarms, a carbon monoxide alarm, and a couple fire extinguishers.
We are choosing to add Kidde Fire Safety Equipment because it is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fire safety products, and it has already proven itself to us once before at my parent’s house.
Kidde’s mission is to provide solutions that protect people and their homes from the damages of fire and other hazards. And after over 100 years of service, you can find Kidde products in homes and businesses around the world! Kidde smoke and carbon monoxide alarms have helped prevent injuries and have minimized damage by alerting people to dangers earlier.
In addition to adding equipment to our home, we checked on things like how our furnace works, checking if our dryer is hooked up properly, being sure to always keep candles out of reach of our little one, scheduling to regularly test our smoke alarms, and following our fire safety checklist. As the daughter of a firefighter, these little things have been drilled into me throughout my life- and I couldn’t be more thankful.

While our toddler isn’t quite ready for safety talks about fire prevention and other emergencies, we are making sure to prepare our family. We will not only have fire escape plans, but be sure to practice them. Did you know only 71% of Americans have an escape plan in case of a fire, and of those, only 47% of them have practiced it?
I know I will do whatever it takes to protect what matters: my family. Fortunately for fire safety, it only takes a moment. Take the time today to talk to your kids, make a plan, and protect your home and family with Kidde’s fire safety essentials, available at The Home Depot or Walmart.
