Moulin Rouge! The Musical is now playing at the Keller Auditorium in Portland, and this is seriously one you are going to want to see!
I got to go into this show with zero context or idea of what it was about, and if you’re able to do the same, I highly recommend it. Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a seductive, modern musical with a love story that will make you laugh just as much as it makes your heart break.
Whether you know the show or not, you’ll be tapping your foot and humming along anyway with the collage of modern songs that are sung throughout- something I wasn’t expecting, but really loved. And from others around us during intermission, it sounds like the song selection has been updated very recently. So, even if you’ve seen Moulin Rouge! The Musical before- it will be a whole new experience!
The company of Moulin Rouge! The Musical was some of the best talent I have ever seen- and I say that genuinely. Christian, played by Conor Ryan, managed to charm every single person in the room, break our hearts with his obvious sorrow, and then feel genuinely uneasy as he spirals into absolute madness. I have no idea how he is able to give that genuine of a performance night after night, because it felt like we were hearing and feeling his story for the first time ever!
Equally as talented, Satine, played by Courtney Reed, was able to pull you under her spell as easily as she did to Christian. She truly did “shine bright like a diamond,” but it was her performance of ‘Firework’ that gave everyone in the theater chills over their entire body.
Offering some more lighthearted moments were Zidler, Santiago, and Toulouse with comedic outbursts and inappropriate jokes throughout the show. BUT! Can we talk about the spicy rendition of Bad Romance between Santiago (Gabe Martinez) and Nini (Libby Lloyd)?! (HOT!!!) They really put their own twist onto the well known song, and the seductive dance paired along with it would make you think they have been lovers and dance partners for years, it was so natural.
There is too much to mention, but I can guarantee you will not be disappointed with this show. Get ticket and additional show information below!
