There’s something truly magical about witnessing a timeless classic like Les Misérables come to life on stage, and the recent production at the Keller Auditorium in Portland, running from November 7th to November 12th, 2023, was nothing short of spectacular. With an extraordinary cast, jaw dropping orchestra, and a captivating storyline, it’s a musical experience that will leave you breathless, and I couldn’t be more excited to share details about this amazing performance.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Les Misérables is a powerful tale of love, sacrifice, and redemption set against the backdrop of post-revolutionary France. At the heart of it all is the relentless pursuit of justice by the indomitable Inspector Javert, the undying love of Marius and Cosette, and the heart-wrenching plight of the desperate Fantine, who is forced to make unimaginable sacrifices for her daughter, Cosette. Her story, in particular, is a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
The production at Keller Auditorium did justice to this epic story, bringing it to life with breathtaking sets, stunning costumes, and a live orchestra that breathed even more life into the beloved musical score by Claude-Michel Schönberg. The stage design was ingenious, seamlessly transitioning from the crowded, gritty streets of Paris to the ethereal backdrop of the barricades.
But what truly made this production exceptional were the standout performances of the cast, with two actors shining particularly brightly in my eyes. Haley Dortch’s portrayal of Fantine was a revelation, capturing the character’s vulnerability and inner strength with a level of emotional depth and the slightest hint of current pop in her voice that left the audience in awe. Her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” was a showstopper, leaving hardly a dry eye in the house. Fantine was a true highlight, showcasing her remarkable vocal talent and acting skills.
Equally incredible was the performance of Nick Cartell as Jean Valjean. He absolutely embodied the character’s transformation from a hardened ex-convict to a compassionate, selfless man with grace and conviction. His powerful rendition of “Bring Him Home” resonated throughout the theater, reminding us of the enduring power of love and redemption. I was sold from the moment he belted out the line “took my flight” in the opening act, chills doesn’t cover it! His overall performance was both electrifying and heartwarming.
Popular songs and scenes in this production included the rousing ensemble number “One Day More,” the heartrending “On My Own” sung by Eponine, and the electrifying student revolution scene at the barricades, which had the entire audience on the edge of their seats.
