Hamilton is HERE! And I was impressed beyond measure with this talented cast.
Hamilton is one of the most talked about new musicals, and every tour brings fans by the thousands. Some may question the show that raps about American history with interpretive dance in the background, but I promise, it comes together in the best way. So great, that I have traveled to see it a total of three times!
Out of the three times I have seen Hamilton, this production has some of the best cast I’ve ever seen. Angelica, played by Marja harmon, is the most spot on I’ve ever heard compared to the original Broadway cast. The strength and pain in her voice is so easily felt.
The same goes for her sister, Eliza, played by Charlotte Mary Wen. She had the classic tenderness of Eliza, and you could witness her transformation throughout the entire show. Her voice was so crisp & pure, you couldn’t help but melt into all of her emotions, especially during the finale song- there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
And can we TALK about Paris Nix who played both Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson?! I’ve never seen one person be able to portray two separate characters in one show so effortlessly and spot on. When he belted out the first notes of “What’d I Miss,” you couldn’t help but grin ear to ear. The comedic qualities and talent he brought to the stage helped soften the blows of heartbreak after heartbreak in the second act.
There was certainly no talent lacking with Hamilton and the rest of his crew either. Andy Tofa who played Laurens and Philip had one of the clearest voices and charismatic smiles- perfect for both of the roles he played. And you couldn’t help but fall in love with the big teddy bear Hercules Mulligan, played by Justin Showell, who also played James Madison in the second act.
And Hamilton himself? Phew! From those first words, “Alexander Hamilton,” you are mesmerized by his smooth voice. You can truly see his transofrmation mentally, emotionally, and almost physically throughout the entire show. His deceptions, his fear, and his pain with a few brief moments of joy. Julius Thomas III truly brought Hamilton back to life for the audience that night, and I was so impressed.
As usual, (in my opinion) Aaron Burr was the true star of the show! I will always have a special place in my heart for Burr, played by Donald Webber Jr in this show. I know exactly how the show ends, but I felt like I was watching Burr’s life unfold before me for the first time- and I was really rooting for him. The entire night, you could truly feel his resentment for Hamilton build, and his anger grow after he receives blow after blow. Between his heartache, and Hamilton’s arrogance, you almost find yourself excusing his behavior!
All in all, this was one of the best productions of Hamilton I’ve ever seen, including the original cast recordings, and I HIGHLY recommend grabbing your tickets while you can for the Portland dates! Look below for additional show and ticket info!
