This Edible Outer Space Play Dough is a super, duper easy 2 ingredient play dough for little kids that aren’t ready for “real” play dough.
I will never forget the face my little one made when he took a huge bite of play dough at OMSI. It was a mixture of utter disgust, confusion, and betrayal! He immediately started spitting everywhere, chucked a huge ball of dough, and flipped his tray as the other toddlers stared with wide eyes. The first time mom in me figured he would have learned a hard lesson… Nope. It only took a whopping 30 seconds for him to do it again!
So in the end, he was pissed if he was eating it, and he was equally pissed when I dragged him away. Thankfully a foam block and a plastic banana was able to soothe him immediately.
Since we are obviously not ready for “real” play dough, but he still had a blast. I decided to make my own version that he could play with, was bright, and wasn’t full of cups of salt. While he is more likely to take nibbles now, he equally loves squishing, molding, and playing with his edible outer space play dough. Get the super, duper easy recipe below!
Edible Outer Space Play Dough
The Ingredients:
- 1 container of white Frosting (I used colored frosting I found at the grocery store)
- Food coloring (if you don’t find the colored frosting or want other colors not available in the colored frosting!)
- 2 cups powdered sugar
The Directions:
- Using a stand mixer, or a bowl with a hand mixer, add the frosting.
- Add one cup of powdered sugar and mix well.
- Slowly add second cup of powdered sugar. You want the mixture to not be terribly sticky to the touch. It will be a bit sticky but shouldn’t be super sticky!
- If you are using white frosting, add your food coloring. Start with 2-3 drops and add 1-2 drops until you get the color you want.
- Scrape mixture out of bowl and onto your flat work surface that is dusted with powdered sugar.
- Knead mixture until it is smooth and no longer sticks to your hands and fingers. You may need to add ½ cup or so of powdered sugar until it gets to this point.
- Store your edible play doh in the fridge in an airtight container or baggie until ready for use. Allow to sit out for 10-15 minutes before the kids play with it as it will be a bit hard after being in the fridge!
