I received complimentary tickets in exchange for my review of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Earlier this week, I was transported to world of pure imagination. That’s right- I saw Charlie And The Chocolate Factory at the Keller Auditorium in Portland!
I grew up reading Roald Dahl’s books and watching both versions of the Charlie And The Chocolate Factory movies. So, I was so excited to relive my childhood, and to see the Broadway musical version.
From the beginning, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is noticeably different from the stories and movies you know and love- but not in a bad way! The first act focuses on Charlie Bucket’s life, and those around him. His mother is as hard working as ever, working several jobs to keep their shabby home since Charlie’s father passed away.
And Charlie actually meets Willy Wonka before the factory opens its doors. Willy Wonka opens a small candy shop in Charlie’s neighborhood- the first one in years! Charlie and Willy become close, having many conversations about how to drum up the candy business for the “younger people” such as airing commercials on T.V. In the end, it is Charlie who gives Willy the idea to hold a spectacular contest: the chance to tour his chocolate factory, with one winner who will receive a lifetime supply of chocolate at the end!
After the contest to find the five golden tickets begins, Charlie stops into the candy shop each day and discovers on after the other has been found! Each child who finds a ticket is obviously spoiled, and has a hilarious backstory and song to go along with them. My personal favorite was Augustus Gloop- an overweight German child who eats, and eats, and eats! But to his mother, there is just “More Of Him To Love.”
Just as Charlie has lost all hope of finding a golden ticket, Willy closes his candy shop, and leaves behind a dollar on the floor. After an attempt to return it to him, Charlie uses it to purchase a Wonka Bar, and finds the last golden ticket!
Once Charlie and the rest of the group enter the chocolate factory, there are intricate sets, hilarious songs, jokes that go over the little one’s heads, oh- and Oompa-Loompas galore!
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is a heartfelt, funny show that is perfect for the entire family. There are jokes for everyone, whether children or adults, and the songs, sets , and characters will bring a smile to everyone’s face!
Make sure to bring the family to see Charlie And The Chocolate Factory at the Keller Auditorium before it’s gone! It is an experience you will never forget.
