There are so many things to know when making your website your own business. When I started Seasonal Memories, It wasn’t necessarily to make money or have a regular posting schedule. it was just something I did on the side for pleasure to document my recipes and feelings. I didn’t think anyone was reading, and I honestly didn’t care!
But, the first time I had a pin on Pinterest blow up, and was actually getting page views on my website, I realized I needed to get my act together! And when I found out I was pregnant with my first child, I knew I wanted to work on my blog full time.
It was about time that I found out how to categorize, code, get my posts into a theme, figure out my customer churn, and figure out how to pitch brands to collaborate. So, I compiled a list below of the 4 main things you need to know before you start your own website from the bones up!
Get A .com Web Address:
While it was nice to have a free website on Blogger, If you don’t have a .com website address, most- if not all brands will not take you very seriously if you are hoping to collaborate. Having a .com will also make your website more searchable and you will pop up more when a topic or post is searched on Google.
Go to Go Daddy to search available domain names, and make sure you use a promo code- they almost always have one.
After you have purchased your domain, you will need a website host such as Blue Host, Host Monster, or dozens more.
Claim ALL Of Your Social Media Handles:
As soon as you have purchased your domain name, claim your social handles! Nothing is worse than having mismatched handles on social media. Try to make them all match if possible, and remember, some social platforms have character limits such as Twitter.
Pick Out A Theme That Matched Your Site’s Personality:
Okay, this is my favorite part! Choosing a theme (blog layout) will give your website a whole new personality. The hard part? There are easily thousands to choose from. I recommend going onto Etsy to pick one out. They are cheap, some you can customize, and some of them are even one click installation. Score! I have spent days at a time tearing my hair out trying to install WordPress themes before.
Find Out Who Your Target Audience Is:
While you may want to talk about food, motherhood, makeup, rock bands, and your duck business all on the same website, it is not the best practice. Make sure you have a few select areas you talk about and try to really reach those people interested in it and keep them as return visitors.
If you really want to talk about something off topic, go for it and see how your audience reacts to it. You can always delete or archive it it is a bust, or keep posting that content if it is a hit!
